Week 1 has just ended and language acquisition so far is not too bad, it's actually my favorite part of every day. We wake up extremely early, partly because the call to prayer begins at 4am and there is no way that anyone could sleep through it. It's a loud speaker from each mosque that sings/prays from each village and you just hear echoes  from far and near of devout readings that go on for at least an hour. It's disorienting when you wake up from it but beautiful once you're awake and you listen to the voices of different ages and genders combining into one.

It's actually crazy how quickly you come to realize the importance of community and the significance that the community holds in investing in you and how much we as volunteers should value investing in those around us. The other day, I came home after traveling from Malang and taking angkots (vans) back home- I realized I lost the keys to my room! Of all the ways to royally mess up, this is definitely something I do. After trying every key we could find in the household and none of them fitting, my host uncle and a friend of the family unscrewed my window, then unhinged my door and completely took out the lock and replaced it with a different one and just like that everything was fixed and after a few jabs of poking fun at the silly American it was forgotten and everything went back to normal. Took my mandi (bath) and ate my dinner, spent some time with my family, watched some tv and talked about how crazy people are on teledramas went to sleep and woke up to yet another call to prayer.
